Mariamman Hindu temple gets its name famous as the only Hindu temple which is still open in Ho Chi Minh City and it is also a worship place for both Hindus and non-Hindus living in Saigon. Constructed at the end of the 19th century, this temple was particularly dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mariamman that is trusted to hold magical powers, such as curing diseases and helping humans to find their match. Today, it is known as a sacred site by both Vietnamese and Chinese.
Conveniently situated close to Ben Thanh Market, the temple was constructed by traders from an Indian state, namely Tamil Nadu. Up to now, it has still been well-maintained with the support from the government. From the distance, your eyes will be drawn to the temple’s gate which is topped with entrance tower, just like the ancient Gopura. For visitors, this is a structure with multiple tiers where figurines of deities are decorated on every level.
Once inside, the atmosphere is lively, mysterious and sacred. Tourists may even feel the powerful smell of incense curling upwards in the air. The centerpiece at the altar in the middle of the temple is a statue of the Deity Mariamman. The statue is enclosed by other well-known Hindu deities, including the elephant-headed god, namely Ganesha. There are also 2 lingams, which are the symbolic representative of the Shiva. The shrine is usually full of offerings from visitors, such as flowers and joss sticks. When following the stairs up from the entrance, you can see other 2 colorful towers on the roof which are also adorned with Hindu gods, goddesses and lions.
A prayer wall is situated at the rear of the Mariamman temple. This is a unique place where you may watch worshippers praying with the hope that the goddess will clearly hear what they wish.
There is a permanent caretaker in the temple who is always pleased to guide visitors to different areas. While you will be mesmerized the temple’s architecture in both inside and outside, don’t forget to ask permission from this caretaker before you take any pictures. In addition, show off your respect by removing your shoes before you step up onto the raised podium as well as dressing politely and conservatively.
This temple is open every day for tourists and worshipers, from 7 AM to 8 PM. It is a wise idea to visit here in the early morning to avoid crowds and enjoy fresh air. Since the Mariamman temple has a favorable location (45 Truong Dinh Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City and is close by Ben Thanh Market), you are easily able to get there by taxi, grab bike, bus or even going for a stroll from the market.
